Hi everyone Ive been trying to find info on the igintion coils for my car but cant find alot out about them. i know each cylinder has a individual ignition coil. Now here is my question im gettin a misfire cylinder 5 code. I changed all my plugs out and am still having problems. Should i change out the #5 igntion coil or do them all? Also has anyone else had a similar problem and am i way of course with this. any input would be a great help. Thanks Thurston

Simplest way to prove it's the coil is to swap 5 for one from another cylinder and see if the misfire follows the suspect coil.

If I understood correctly you are saying there is oil on top of the plug in the well where the coil fits on to the plug. Usual reason is that the oil filler cap is leaking, simple fix new seal for the cap.

I've had misfire problems before on the V70/S60.. so have a few others. Generally it's the coil pack that has gone. I've tried the "moving the packs" around trick, only problem was that I had 2 coil packs that had gone!! That flummoxed the AA man as well. How are you reading the codes? and have you reset the codes? The full misfire code can take a while to set apparently. Most "common" cause of coil pack failures tends to be after having an "oil leak" onto the top of the engine caused by a leaking oil filler cap seal, According to the nice local volvo tech it can cause numerous issues, and what definitely kills coil packs is trying to clean the top of the engine off using liquid...... (I know two people who have done that!) Also, we've found that normally when one coil pack goes, another 1 or two normally follow for some reason... Depending on where you are in the country I have a set of spare coil packs if you want to try a couple :) I'm not home for a while though.

If you have cleaned the oil out moved the coils around and you are still getting a misfire on the same cylinder then I would suggest that the next step is to carry out a compression test and maybe a leakdown test to see if there is an internal mechanical explanation for the problem.

Hi again I do my test with a obd2 reader. I do erase the codes everytime and it always comes back as the same error code 305. So I got it booked in with volvo(nice week and a half to get in). Knowing my luck ill blow the engine out of it by then. of course this has to happen when i only get 10 minutes of daylight after work and cant work on it outside.
